About kindergarten sight words
Sight words are the common words a child benefits from recognising instantly — the, and, is, you. Many of them are irregular enough that sounding them out is slow or misleading.
The important caveat: sight words are a supplement to phonics, not a replacement for it. A child who memorises 100 words but cannot decode a new one is not reading yet.
What actually helps
- Read it, trace it, write it, then use it in a spoken sentence.
- Five or six words per week is a realistic pace.
- Keep going with letter sounds alongside. Sight words alone do not build a reader.
