Grade 2 milestones (age 7)

Grade 2 is a consolidation year. Reading gets smoother, and maths moves from counting to genuine place value.

Most children do most of these by the end of the year. Being behind on a few is common and usually resolves. Nothing here is an assessment.

Reading

  • Reads aloud with expression and natural phrasing
  • Works out what a new word means from the sentence around it
  • Reads short chapter books, with support
  • Answers questions about why a character did something

Maths

  • Adds and subtracts within 100 including regrouping
  • Knows doubles and near-doubles instantly
  • Measures with a ruler in centimetres or inches
  • Counts money and works out simple change

Writing

  • Writes a paragraph with a beginning, middle and end
  • Uses commas in a list
  • Edits their own work when prompted to check it
  • Writes for different reasons — a story, a note, a list

When it's worth asking someone. If reading is still effortful enough that they lose the meaning by the end of a sentence, ask the school for a reading screen.
