About division facts
Division facts are multiplication facts read backwards. 56 ÷ 7 = 8 is the same knowledge as 7 × 8 = 56, which is why a child who is shaky on tables will look like they cannot divide when the real gap is elsewhere.
Every question here divides exactly, so a child meets remainders only once the basic relationship is secure.
What actually helps
- Ask 'what times 7 gives 56?' rather than 'what is 56 divided by 7?'
- If division is slow, go back and check the tables. That is nearly always the cause.
- Introduce remainders only after exact division is comfortable.
Common questions
Should children learn division before or after times tables?
After. Division facts are the inverse of multiplication facts, so the tables have to be reasonably secure first or division becomes guesswork.
Why does my child find division so much harder?
Usually it is not division — it is incomplete recall of the times tables showing up in a new place. Test the tables directly to find out.
