Grade 3 milestones (age 8)

Grade 3 is the hinge year. A child stops learning to read and starts reading to learn, and any gap that was manageable before starts to compound.

Most children do most of these by the end of the year. Being behind on a few is common and usually resolves. Nothing here is an assessment.

Reading

  • Reads independently for twenty minutes at a stretch
  • Summarises a chapter in a few sentences
  • Infers how a character feels from evidence in the text
  • Uses a contents page and an index to find things

Maths

  • Knows multiplication facts to 10 × 10
  • Divides with remainders
  • Understands fractions as equal parts of a whole
  • Solves two-step word problems

Writing

  • Writes multi-paragraph pieces with a clear structure
  • Uses paragraphs to separate ideas
  • Chooses more precise words on purpose
  • Joins letters, if the curriculum teaches cursive

When it's worth asking someone. Times tables that are not becoming automatic is the most common Grade 3 gap and the one most worth closing now rather than later.
