About reading comprehension for Grade 1 and 2
This is the point where reading stops being about the words and starts being about the meaning. The passages here are deliberately short — a hundred words or so — because a child who has just become fluent has a limited budget of attention, and a long passage spends it all before the questions arrive.
Each sheet mixes four kinds of question on purpose. Literal recall gives a way in. Vocabulary-in-context teaches the habit of working a word out from its surroundings. Main idea and inference are the two that transfer to every other subject they will ever study.
What actually helps
- Underline the sentence that holds the answer. It turns guessing into evidence.
- For the inference question, ask what the passage does not say but shows.
- One passage read properly beats three read quickly.
Common questions
What is the difference between main idea and summary?
The main idea is what the whole passage is mostly about, in one line. A summary retells the parts. Children usually give you a summary when asked for a main idea, and learning the difference is most of the skill.
How long should a Grade 2 child spend on one of these?
Ten minutes, including reading the passage twice. If it is taking twenty, the level is too high — drop a level rather than pushing through.
