About addition within 20
Adding within 20 is the year's main event in Grade 1. The interesting part is not 4 + 3 — it is 8 + 5, where the answer crosses ten and a child has to do something cleverer than count on.
The strategy worth teaching is 'make ten': 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3. Once a child sees that, the rest of the year gets easier. Most children need dozens of repetitions before it becomes automatic, which is exactly what a generator is good for.
What actually helps
- Watch for the sums that cross ten — those are the ones that need repeating.
- Doubles (6+6, 7+7) and near-doubles are worth memorising outright.
- Twenty questions is a normal Grade 1 page. Time it if they enjoy that, don't if they don't.
Common questions
What is 'making ten' and why does it matter?
It is regrouping a sum so one part reaches ten first: 8 + 5 becomes 8 + 2 + 3 = 13. It matters because it is the same move used later in two-digit addition with regrouping.
My child knows the answers but is very slow. Is that a problem?
Not on its own. Speed follows familiarity. Short daily practice does more for it than longer sessions, and timing a child who finds it stressful usually backfires.
