About reading comprehension for Grade 3 to 5
Grade 3 is the year a child stops learning to read and starts reading to learn, and comprehension quietly becomes the subject that every other subject depends on.
Roughly half the passages here are informational rather than stories, which is deliberate. Non-fiction is what children are actually asked to read in science, history and every test they will sit, and it is the kind that free worksheet sites are shortest on. The questions lean towards inference and author's purpose, because those are the ones that separate a child who read the words from one who understood them.
What actually helps
- Ask them to point to the evidence before they say the answer.
- For the main-idea question, cover the options first and let them say it in their own words.
- If they get every question right instantly, move up a level — this should take some effort.
Common questions
Why are so many passages non-fiction?
Because that is what school actually asks children to read from Grade 3 onward, and because almost every free comprehension worksheet online is a story. Children who read fluently but struggle with a science textbook usually have an informational-text problem, not a reading problem.
My child guesses on multiple choice. What can I do?
Cover the options. Ask the question, let them answer aloud in their own words, then uncover and let them find the closest match. It converts recognition back into recall.
Thank you — that genuinely helps.
