Grade 4 is where written output ramps up. Children who read fluently but avoid writing become noticeable this year.

Most children do most of these by the end of the year. Being behind on a few is common and usually resolves. Nothing here is an assessment.

Reading

  • Reads longer texts alone and stays with them
  • Compares two texts on the same subject
  • Handles subject-specific vocabulary in science and history
  • Distinguishes what the text says from what they already thought

Maths

  • Multiplies multi-digit numbers
  • Long division with a one-digit divisor
  • Adds and subtracts fractions with the same denominator
  • Works with area and perimeter

Writing

  • Writes an opinion piece with reasons and evidence
  • Takes notes from a source in their own words
  • Revises after feedback rather than just recopying
  • Writes legibly at speed

When it's worth asking someone. Avoidance of writing specifically — rather than of all schoolwork — is worth investigating rather than pushing through.
