About addition within 10

Addition within 10 is where arithmetic starts. Before a child can add 8 and 7 they need to know, without counting, that 3 and 4 make 7. That fluency comes from doing a small number of sums often rather than a large number of sums once.

Ten questions is usually the right length at this age. If your child is still counting on fingers, that is completely fine and normal — finger counting is a stage, not a problem. It fades on its own once the facts are familiar.

What actually helps

  • Do five minutes daily rather than thirty minutes on Sunday.
  • Say the sum aloud while writing it. Hearing it helps it stick.
  • If they get stuck, put out that many objects. Abstract comes after concrete.

Common questions

How many addition problems should a 5-year-old do at once?

Ten is plenty. The aim is recall, not endurance. A child who finishes ten quickly and correctly has got more from it than one who grinds through forty.

Should I let my child count on their fingers?

Yes. Finger counting is a normal developmental stage that most children grow out of once the number facts become automatic. Taking it away early usually just adds anxiety.
